Project Poetry Live!
Project Poetry Live! has now affected a generation of students. In
its 14th year, it receives support from the State of Connecticut
Department of Education Interdistrict Grants, Community Foundation of
Northwest Connecticut, LPA members, the Connecticut Commission on
Culture and Tourism and othersEach year professional poets, artists, musicians,
and dancers work with 2,400 middle and high school students in seven
Connecticut school districts—Thomaston, Watertown, Litchfield, Wamogo, Winsted
and two Waterbury schools. The 7th graders write poetry, attend
writer's workshops, see their words become music at the hands of
composer Don Braden, design sets under the guidance of regional
artist and educator, Lisa Huebenthal, and work with community artists translating
their words into other artforms. |

And they dance! We are thrilled to invite the
Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company to return to teach all 2,400 teens. Nai-Ni
Chen, based in the NY/NJ area, successfully combines the dynamic
freedom of American modern dance with the grace and splendor of
Asian Art. Celebrating the diversity of ideas shaped by the
immigrant experience, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company bridges the
gap of understanding between East and West,
to teach all 2,400 teens.
Nai-Ni Chen will create special
dance pieces for approximately 70 seventh graders as well as
"alumni" dancers (8th to 12th graders). This latter group,
bitten by the dance bug, return year after year on their own
time to remain with the project. |
This year we
also anticipate college freshmen, sophomores and even juniors to return. Thirty
more students become a big band under Don Braden's baton and back
the dancers with Braden's original music.
They all appeared at Naugatuck Valley College last June to rave
reviews, where they will again perform this coming June 6, 2008, for
audiences of some 2,000 fellow students, their families and the
general public. Another 60 - 70 are responsible for a glorious stage
set of collaboratively designed and painted banners. Still more
students artists (up to 200) display their work for a post concert
reception and gallery.
Public school teachers in PPL guide the project and learn from each
other and the arts professionals. They mount the art show of student
works, institute poetry coffee house readings in their home schools,
create new curriculum around project themes, compile poetry
anthologies for their school libraries, encourage students to enter
writing contests and build interdistrict communication and parent
involvement. Parents serve as teachers' aides and chaperones. We are
grateful for their help and proud of their talented children.
Tickets will be available for the June 6th performance in advance
and at the door.
Tickets: $15, General Admission
